Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
In 1970 Michael and Arlene Bernstein planted grapevines on Mount Veeder. Currently, the winery operates three vineyards located in High Peaks in the Mayacama Mountains producing robust flavors, concentrated wines. It has a rich nose featuring ripe black currants, plum, black cherries, chocolate, and spices. It comes full of juicy fruit. Black apples, fine tannins, and good mountain acidity make for a balanced, complete, complex wine.
Double Diamond 2018 by Schrader Cellars Oakville Napa
The Double Diamond 2018 is brand new, made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 50% new French oak for 16 months of age. Around 80% of the grapes come from the To Kalon Vineyard. You will notice a plate filled with ripe red fruit mixed with mint licorice and spices. The palate is highly balanced with ripening but presents tannins, lush red fruit, and lingering long-term complex texture.
2016 Obsidian Ridge Half Mile Cabernet Sauvignon, Lake County
The 2016 Half Mile by Obsidian Ridge is a well-structured wine that shows terrific spice notes on the nose and the palate. Fruity flavors of plum and black cherry mingle with toasted oak notes and chocolate towards the back of the palate. The Red Hills region’s potential for Cabernet is relatively untapped but could be the very future of California Red Wine.
2016 Penfolds Bin 407
This is an interesting and complex Cabernet blend with grapes from South Australia’s most excellent Cab-growing areas. It boasts hints of tobacco and bramble on the nose with an interesting interplay of black currant with olive on the palate. This wine with a complex structure is produced in style bringing out the peppery finish. But you might need a year or two to enjoy these.
2016 Ancient Peaks Cabernet
It may be the most fun wine on our list of best cabs. It offers Bordeaux-like notes and is a blend of leather tobacco and wild game. Its fruits flavors are blackberry and black currant with a hint of soy sauce. It’s something to enjoy now or to sleep later. Gayot’s first wine of the week comes from Galicia, one of the most beautiful parts of green Spain.
2016 DAOU Vineyards Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
DAOU Vineyards’ Reserve Vineyard is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon 12% Petit Verdot 10% Merlot. Paso Robles isn’t California’s most popular wine region, but it is highly respected by those who love intense, mature red wines. It gives complex aromas and flavors of black plum, cherry, cassis olive, mushrooms, cedar, and spice, and all are delivered to life in dramatic depth.
Château Mouton Rothschild 2015
2015 was a very successful year for most but not all wineries in Bordeaux. Mouton has the best vintage of Mouton Rothschild. A deeply colored wine, it delivers incredible black fruit flavors balanced with sexy spices. It’s a wine you can drink now if you really cannot wait, but it should be developed further for the next decade or more.
2016 Via Tarapacá Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon
Tarapaca makes our list the best Cabernets because it is one of the better values that America provides. A rich and earthy wine, complex tastes, although their focus is on black plums and spices. It is rich on the palate and has round tannins with ricotta fruit character and a tobacco aroma at the end with a touch of Vegeta.
2016 Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon
Penley’s Phoenix Winehouse is one of those great wines of an affordable price. This dark but richly concentrated wine has tongue-coating tannins, intense blackberry and cassis flavors, and strong curry spice. However, it is only around $12… pretty affordable.
Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia DOC 2014
The 2014 Sassicaia puts the Italian Cabernet on the map. It offers strawberry and black cherry fruit intermingled with intense baking spices and a hint of sweaty leather. It’s almost weightless. Yet, it does stay long to make the impression.
2015 Joseph Phelps Insignia
2015 Insignia was made with 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. It is rich in blackberry and cassis, cocoa graphite and cedar, and the grip of grainy tannins. This is a wine you can drink now or cellar in 15 years.
2014 Falesco Tellus Cabernet Sauvignon
This is from my favorite wine region, Umbria, Italy. It is made of 100% farm fruits and has the aromas of blueberries and dried cranberries. A medium-bodied wine ready to drink now offers current and sweet black plum flavor and a remarkably long finish.
Overall Best: 2016 Château Pape Clément Pessac-Chevre
It is named by Pope Clement V, who was the vineyard owner when he was one of the scrappy upstart archbishops of Bordeaux in the early 14th century. It’s a lovely, medium-bodied red with beautiful tannins, smooth fruit, and a long, elegant finish. It boasts a broad-bodied taste palette of light fruits, cherry, and fig alongside black tastiest oats, forest floor tobacco, and the aromatic mocha spice and cinnamon.
Red wine is so plebeian. It’s time to swap it out! Check Out a Bottle of Prosecco
Best Value: 2018 Avalon Cabernet Sauvignon
Avalon’s Cabernet is one of those wines that slips down your throat with ease and gets caught in your snout. Redberry fruit, sweet oak spices, and vanilla find soft on-front fruit with powerful grippy tannins and an excellent oak-driven finish. The winery uses advanced, energy-efficient vinifying techniques. It is produced using grapes grown in California’s warmer Lodi region and grown in Lodi. It is sustainably produced and made with sophisticated American techniques.
